Your saved web is personal. This privacy policy explains what information we collect when you use Shelf, why we collect it, and how you remain in control. By accessing our apps, websites, or related services you agree to the practices described below.
Information we collect
- Account details. When you request an invite or create an account we collect your name, email address, avatar, and any profile information you choose to share so we can personalize your experience.
- Saved content. Shelf stores the links, notes, highlights, audio, and metadata you add across devices so your library stays in sync.
- Usage diagnostics. We capture limited technical data such as device type, app version, crash reports, and performance signals to keep Shelf reliable and secure.
- Support messages. Emails or in-app feedback you send us are stored so we can respond and improve the product.
How we use your information
- Deliver the core features of Shelf, including syncing your saves and personalized recommendations.
- Send transactional communications like onboarding tips, service updates, and security alerts.
- Monitor for outages, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service.
- Research ways to improve Shelf, such as testing new layouts or measuring feature adoption.
Legal bases for processing
We rely on the following legal grounds to process your data: (i) the performance of our contract with you when providing Shelf, (ii) our legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the service, and (iii) your consent when we ask to send optional updates or communications.
How we share information
We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers. We only disclose information to trusted processors who help us run Shelf—such as hosting, analytics, customer support, and payment vendors. Each partner is bound by confidentiality obligations and only accesses the minimum data needed to perform their work. We may also share information when required by law or to protect our users and platform.
Data retention
Shelf keeps your data only as long as necessary to operate the service, fulfill legal obligations, or resolve disputes. If you delete your account we remove associated content from our active systems within 30 days, subject to any legal requirements that require longer retention.
International transfers
Shelf operates primarily from the United States but may use vendors located in other countries. Whenever your data leaves your region, we implement safeguards like standard contractual clauses to ensure a comparable level of protection.
Your choices and rights
- Access, correct, or delete your data by emailing privacy@shelf.app.
- Export your saves anytime from the Shelf app settings.
- Opt out of marketing emails by following the unsubscribe instructions in those messages.
- Control analytics and crash reporting by adjusting the diagnostics toggle in the app.
Security
We use encryption in transit, scoped access controls, regular audits, and monitoring to protect your information. No service can guarantee perfect security, but we actively review our safeguards and respond quickly to incidents.
Children
Shelf is not directed at children under 16. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child without parental consent, we will remove it immediately.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When changes are material we will notify you via email or in-app messaging before the revised policy takes effect.
